Abolition of Registration Labels on cars is a wrong move

date released
29/09/2011

The Motor Traders’ Association of NSW is opposed to the abolition or registration stickers based on the Western Australian experience.

Western Australian car repairers say there has been a dramatic increase in the number of unlicensed vehicles turning up in their workshops since the abolition of registration stickers. They say this situation is of concern because their employees often have to take cars on test drives, and run the risk of driving unlicensed vehicles and not having insurance cover if involved in a road accident.

MTA NSW Turns 100 'Celebration of a Life Time'

date released
10/06/2010
The Motor Traders’ Association of New South Wales will celebrate its 100th year of service to the Motor Industry at the iconic Sydney Town Hall Saturday 12th June.

The MTA NSW was founded on the 16th January 1910; this was a day to remember for the Motor Industry in Australia. Formed by a group of concerned motor vehicle businessman who decided that an Association should be established to protect their mutual interest and promote the Motor Industry.

100 years later the MTA NSW is the oldest State based Motoring Association in Australia and is also the largest representing more than 5,000 motor industry businesses ranging from repairers to New Car Dealers.

MTA will be acknowledging Life Members and Past Presidents of the Associations who have made an outstanding contribution to the Motor Industry.

MTA NSW will also celebrate its 3 oldest continuous memberships:
1. H E Lancaster ii Singleton joined MTA on the 20th May 1924.
2. J R Sealey in Condobolin joined MTA on the 18th December 1929.
3. Hayes Toyota in Murwillumbah joined MTA on the 20th April 1930.
All three collectively have more than 100 years of Trading in the Motor Industry.

James McCall CEO of MTA said “it is not often that a business remains boyant for this length of time let alone support their Association”

“MTA and the benefits and services it provides to members have assisted these businesses as well as many more through these decades”

MTA historical dates to remember:
1914 MTA held the first Motor Show
1922 Registered as an Industrial Union for Employers
1939 Lobbied the Government for the introduction of a Vehicle Safety Check (now known as the Pink Slip)
1974 Played a vital role in the introduction of the Motor Dealers Act
1980 Formed Group Apprentice Scheme
1981 Played a vital role in the introduction of the Motor Vehicle Repairs Act

MTA was the first organisation to introduce a Code of Ethics which all members were obligated to follow, it gave the community a sense of comfort when dealing with a MTA member.

MTA’s continued success is shown in the prestigious sponsorship of the MTA Centenary Gala Ball by significant groups including Capricorn Society, Commonwealth Bank, MTAA Superannuation, QBE, Consolidated Lawyers, Auto Group Australia and MTA Apprenticeships Plus.

Written Off Vehicles - Media Release

date released
08/04/2010
The Motor Traders Association of NSW applauds the action of Government and particularly the Minister David Campbell to ensure written off-motor vehicles no longer represent a danger to the public or a mechanism to legitimize stolen vehicles.

MTA CEO James McCall said “a great many written off vehicles are purchased at auction by “back-yard” repairers, cosmetically repaired and put back on the road in an unsafe condition. Many of these vehicles are death traps.”

“There is also substantial evidence highlighting that the availability of repairable written-off vehicles is significantly contributing to motor vehicle based crime” said James McCall, CEO of MTA NSW “the industry welcomes any effort to reduce criminal activity and unsafe vehicles on our roads”

The decision announced today by the Minister, David Campbell, shows that the NSW Government recognises the seriousness of this growing problem and has the courage to act in the best interest of NSW consumers, despite intense opposition from the insurance industry and its agents.

Negative comments on this decision have been made by the Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council [MVTRC] – consumers should be reminded that this Council is heavily funded by the Insurance Industry and it is no surprise to us that the Council is making comments that would please insurers.  In fact, we have a letter from the Insurance Council of Australia implying that their financial support to the MVTRC would be withdrawn if it did not stop supporting moves to get rid of repairable write-offs”. McCall said

There are, on average 35,900 vehicles written off annually in NSW. Considering these vehicles are assessed by insurance companies as unfit for repair it is distressing that approximately 13,600 of these vehicles are presented for re-registration each year.

“It is important to note that whilst the overall motor vehicle theft figures have reduced in recent years” continued Mr McCall “the number of vehicles that are unrecovered each year has remained static and in some years actually increased.

“When a vehicle is unrecovered it is usually an indication that professional gangs are involved” says Mr McCall

Professional gangs employ a variety of methods to cover their crimes and re-birthed vehicles find their way back into the market, usually purchased privately from an unknown person. The unsuspecting buyer then finds out the vehicle has previously been written-off and in some instances the vehicle is seized by Police as it has been repaired using stolen parts or the identifiers have been interfered with.

“Even if a vehicle is not repaired using stolen parts, backyarders repair the written off vehicle using whatever means necessary and have no regard for the ongoing safety of the vehicle.

“I have seen written off vehicles repaired without replacing airbags that have been deployed and the wiring is interfered with so that the driver has no idea the airbags won’t work in a collision” Mr McCall said.

Motor Traders’ Association Wins Prestigious NSW Safe Work Award 2009

date released
30/10/2009
Finance Minister, The Hon. Joe Tripodi, presented winners of the WorkCover NSW Safe Work Awards, with their awards at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens Grand Pavilion last Thursday night.

The Minister said “It is particularly rewarding this year to see a high number of entries at such a high standard, especially at a time when NSW businesses are recovering from the economic downturn. The number of entries this year topped 100 for the third year in a row, and featured a healthy and highly inventive mix of first-time award entrants and businesses that have come to regard the Safe Work Awards as a major inspiration to improve their safety practise”

Mr Tripodi went on to say “The high standard of entries set the judges a particularly challenging task this year representing solid proof that the workplace safety message is being increasingly embedded in the minds of employers and workers.
There were five categories in all with the first four open to self-nomination. The fifth award [WorkCover’s Leadership Safety Award], which was won by the Motor Traders’ Association of NSW, was selected only from bodies nominated by the Senior Management of WorkCover.

MTA’s CEO said “We are very proud to receive this award as an endorsement of the substantial work we have undertaken, in partnership with WorkCover, to bring about safer working conditions in the motor trades across NSW. I commend all staff involved in the WorkCover partnership and particularly our Workplace Relations Division led by Deputy CEO Greg Hatton and the OH&S project team, David Berlusconi, project leader, and his support Ashley Goss, for their brilliant work in devising and implementing the on-line, web based OH&S and Workers’ Compensation management system, which was a major factor in MTA earning this award.”

Environmental Accreditation for Motor Industry

date released
24/08/2009

The Motor Traders’ Association of NSW has launched an Environmental Accreditation program for the motor industry. The Accreditation is run through the MTA’s Green Stamp Plus program and recognises the environmental achievements of businesses in the motor industry.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in the green credentials of the businesses they deal with. Achieving Green Stamp Environmental Accreditation demonstrates that businesses’ commitment to sustainable and clean practices, and will make that business more attractive to potential customers,” said MTA NSW CEO, James McCall.

“The motor industry has a lot of environmental issues to deal with, and the Association has witnessed the industry embracing these challenges through implementing new technologies and processes. A growing number of businesses have implemented operating processes and are managing particular wastes to a standard never previously achieved in Australia. These achievements should be recognised,” added McCall.

He further stated “As more businesses are rewarded for their environmental initiatives and display the Green Stamp, the profile of the industry will be raised.”

McCall added “Achieving Green Stamp Plus Accreditation is a tangible reward for businesses’ good environmental practices. Becoming accredited gives businesses in the motor industry the opportunity to market its environmental achievements as well as raise morale amongst staff. I would encourage all businesses to seriously consider applying for Accreditation.”

The MTA runs the Green Stamp Plus program for the motor industry in NSW and the ACT. Green Stamp services are available to both Members and non-members of the Association. As well as Accreditation, MTA provides free onsite environmental checks in addition to articles, information guides, Product & Service Directory and sample management plans and policies.

Accreditation is based on a merit system of set criteria relating to environmental management, liquid waste disposal, energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, spill management, air pollution management, noise pollution management and wastewater management. Businesses that achieve Accreditation are awarded with the “Green Stamp” and are able to promote this to their clients and potential customers.

MOTOR INDUSTRY WELCOMES CRACKDOWN

date released
13/08/2009

The Motor Traders’ Association of NSW welcomes the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW moving to improve the management and re-registration of written off motor vehicles.

“There is substantial evidence highlighting that the availability of repairable written off vehicles is significantly contributing to motor vehicle based crime” said James McCall, CEO of MTA NSW. “The automotive industry welcomes any effort to reduce criminal activity and unsafe vehicles on our roads.”

James McCall added “There is abundant evidence of unsafe vehicles on the road risking lives of Australian families.”
The paper released today by the NSW Roads Minister, Michael Daley, shows that the NSW Government recognises the seriousness of this growing problem.

There are, on average, 35,900 vehicles written off annually in NSW. Considering these vehicles are assessed by insurance companies as unfit for repair it is distressing that approximately 13,600 of these vehicles are presented for re-registration each year, having been sold through the auctions, repaired by backyarders and sold to unaware buyers.

“It is important to note that whilst the overall motor vehicle theft figures have reduced in recent years,” continued Mr McCall, “the number of vehicles that are unrecovered each year has remained static and in some years actually increased,”
“When a vehicle is unrecovered it is usually an indication that professional gangs are involved” says Mr McCall.

Professional gangs employ a variety of methods to cover their crimes and rebirthed vehicles find their way back into the market, usually purchased privately by an innocent member of the community. The unsuspecting buyer then finds out the vehicle has previously been written off and in some instances the vehicle is seized by Police as it has been repaired using stolen parts or the identifiers have been interfered with.

“Even if a vehicle is not repaired using stolen parts, these vehicles are repaired in unlicensed people’s backyards using whatever means necessary with no regard for the ongoing safety of the vehicle. Vehicle safety or structural integrity is not tested before the vehicle is re-registered. These backyard repairs are not being monitored.”

“I have seen written off vehicles repaired without replacing airbags that have been deployed and the wiring is interfered with so that the driver has no idea the airbags won’t work in a collision” Mr McCall said.

HOLDEN SAFE

date released
02/06/2009

I am very pleased to stand side-by-side with GM Holden CEO and Chairman Mark Reuss today to say the jobs of over 6000 Australian workers are secure.

General Motors in the United States has filed for Chapter XI bankruptcy overnight, but Holden has not been included.

Holden is safe.

Holden has told the Government that there will be:

  • No change for employees or for Holden supplier payment arrangements;
  • No change to Holden dealer and warranty arrangements;
  • No direct impact on local design, engineering and manufacturing operations; and
  • No change to Holden’s plans to produce a new, four-cylinder, fuel-efficient car in Australia.

I would like to pay tribute to the workers and their families who have endured month upon month of uncertainty, and who have already made considerable sacrifices. Their loyalty and resilience is one of Holden's greatest assets.

This sort of result does not come about by accident.

Holden management, workers, unions, and the Australian Government, have done the hard yards in the lead up to this day and that work has borne fruit.

The introduction of the new Holden four-cylinder car – to be built in Australia and backed by $149 million from the Australian Government and $30 million from the South Australian Government – has been central to securing a bright future for Holden.

This is an example of what we can do in this nation when we work together.

It is an extraordinary result in the middle of a global recession, and one every Australian can be proud of.

$3000 cash for old cars aimed at boosting car industry

date released
23/03/2009

MTA is calling on the Government to follow Europe and the US and implement a stimulus plan to pay drivers $3000 for crushing their old cars.

The scheme is intended to rid Australia of polluting, unsafe cars while providing a much-needed boost to the struggling car industry.

Similar projects are up and running in France, Germany and Brazil, where they have led to an immediate rise in car sales. Germany's new car sales are up by 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, a Bill proposing a similar plan is being considered in the US congress under the banner 'cash for clunkers'.

The Motor Traders Association of NSW has written to Treasurer Wayne Swan explaining the benefits of the initiative, while the Motor Traders Association of Australia (MTAA) has commissioned think tank Access Economics to produce economic modelling on the costs.

The MTA NSW has asked the Government to pay up to $3000 to crush cars more than 10 years old.

Once the car was destroyed the owner would get a certificate to be presented at a car dealership to receive $3000 off a new car.

"We are not specifying buy Australian or anything else," MTA NSW's James McCall said.

"We need to help the industry, including 103,000 small businesses that make a living from the car industry and 318,000 workers."

The MTAA said there were 15 million vehicles in Australia, about half more than 10 years old.

About 2 million of those are worth less than $3000.

Once you remove vintage cars, there would be about 1.5 million vehicles eligible for the scheme.

"The key is the grant has to be at least equal to what the owner would get if they traded it," Mr McCall said.

"Our submission asks the Government to set aside a maximum of $4.5 billion, spread over three years, which will be plenty to cover the cost.

"But it's not just a one-way street. In addition to saving jobs, which is ultimately good for the economy, the Government will get 10 per cent GST on the new car sales."

New vehicles sales slumped to a six-year low in February, data shows.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported new motor vehicle sales fell by a seasonally adjusted 3.5 per cent to 73,190 vehicles in February, down from 75,879 in January.

The last time sales were this low was March 2003.
