The JobTrainer Package Extended

The Motor Traders’ Association (MTA) of NSW Training Division is committed to the ongoing educational requirements of its Members and pleased to announce the Australian Government will invest $2 billion to give hundreds of thousands of apprentices access to new skills by retraining and upskilling them into sectors with job opportunities, as the economy recovers from COVID-19.

In partnership with the states and territories, more Australians will have access to free, or low cost, training places in areas of identified skills needs through the establishment of a new $1 billion JobTrainer fund.

The JobTrainer skills package will also guarantee support for thousands of apprentices (including many in the Automotive industry) jobs across the country by subsidising their wages to keep them employed and their training secured.

The new $1 billion JobTrainer program will provide up to an additional 340,700 training places to help school leavers and job seekers access short and long courses to develop new skills in growth sectors and create a pathway to more qualifications.

This will include $500 million from the Australian Government this year, with a matched contribution being sought from state and territory governments.

Eligibility for the subsidy will be expanded to include medium-sized businesses with fewer than 200 employees who had an apprentice(s) in place on 1 July 2020.

Matt Webster, Senior Manager, Training Policy and Strategy, MTA NSW, said “the JobTrainer package will help keep apprentices in the Automotive Industry engaged, secure and employed in their jobs.”

“The additional good news to Members businesses already covered, the wage subsidy will now be available to medium businesses with less than 200 employees for apprentices employed as at 1 July 2020, many of our Members businesses that employ apprentices will now be supported.”

“The initiative covers 50 per cent of the wages paid to apprentices and trainees, up to $7,000 per quarter. The wage subsidy will also be extended to 31 March 2021.”
Mr Webster remarked, “the Government support of Apprentices and Trainees will dramatically improve the viability of thousands of apprenticeships and Automotive businesses employing them right across Australia, and that is welcome news to our industry.”
