Improper Waste Tyre Storage Leads to $225,000 Fine in Sydney

We understand that running an automotive business requires juggling many priorities. Adherence to industry rules and regulations, though difficult, is one crucial aspect. A recent case involving a Sydney tyre recycling company serves as a reminder of the regulations in place and the potential consequences for non-compliance.

Here's what happened: During a routine inspection, the EPA discovered a tyre recycling company storing far more tyres than their license permitted. Additionally, the tyres were stacked unsafely in areas that could pose a fire hazard. This is especially concerning in the case mentioned, where the storage site was close to residential areas.

At the time of the inspection, the company had double the permitted amount of tyres, roughly equivalent to 35,000 car tyres. Tyre fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish, generating intense heat and thick smoke that can also disrupt air traffic and hamper firefighting efforts.

The company has since improved its compliance measures, though the EPA continues to closely monitor them. The hefty fine of $160,000, which included legal costs for the EPA, serves as a strong reminder of the importance following regulations.

This case isn't an isolated incident. The director of the company was also fined $65,000 earlier this year for similar offences.
