Business Need to Register to send Verified Text Messages

1 July 2026 Telecommunication Changes: Business Need to Register to send Verified Text Messages

1 July 2026 already presents some significant changes for business owners, including with the increase to minimum wages and the commencement of same pay super.

However, as members also may recall, in addition to the above, new changes are also being introduced across Australia to combat the ever-growing nuisance of Spam Calls.

As at 1 July 2026, along with the above, changes are being implemented across all Telecommunication providers and SMS message providers in Australia, requiring that text messages be appropriately labelled by Telco providers (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone etc)

These changes also affect businesses, who now or after 1 July need to register with the Business Register on the Australian Communications Management Authority (ACMA) website.

From 1 July 2026 businesses will need to register the following with the ACMA:

  • Your ABN Details
  • An Authorised Manager/Representative who can confirm your business with the Register

What Happens if I Don’t?

If you fail to do this, you run the risk that your text messages and/or other communications may be flagged as Unregistered when sending.

This means that recipients may inadvertently mistake your texts for scam material

In some cases, this also means that if your SMS service provider is not actively part of the scheme, that text messages may be blocked.

Therefore it is vital that businesses comply with this requirement to avoid interruptions to service.

For more information, please see: Update your details on the Australian Business Register | ACMA. Alternatively, you can also contact your Area Manager or our Legal Team through email via [email protected].
