AIS Rule Update: 18-Month Transition Period Confirmed for Brake Meter Compliance
Transport for NSW has now confirmed in writing that all AIS providers using portable brake decelerometers will have an 18-month transition period, until July 2026, to comply with updated Business Rules requiring test speed to be printed on test readouts.
This follows earlier discussions with Transport NSW and industry stakeholders, during which MTA NSW advocated for a longer adaptation window to support members needing time to purchase new equipment or upgrade existing hardware.
The updated rule is outlined in Appendix 1-A (2), clause 4.4.2(b) of the AIS Business Rules.
Importantly:
- Portable brake meters must be capable of printing the speed at which the test was conducted.
- GPS-enabled devices remain a requirement for mobile examiners.
- Fixed-site examiners may calculate speed using deceleration data and are not required to use GPS.
If you use a Trans Lock brake test meter, you can view popular models affected by the rule change here.
