AIS Rule Update: Clarification Pending on Brake Meter Speed Display Requirements
MTA NSW is aware of ongoing industry uncertainty regarding recent updates to the Business Rules for Authorised Proprietors and Authorised Examiners, particularly in relation to Appendix 1A(2): Portable Brake Testing Decelerometer and the requirement for speed display on brake meter print-outs.
You can access the current AIS Business Rules (effective 7 April 2025): Business Rules for Authorised Proprietors and Authorised Examiners – click here.
Key points for members to note:
- The new AIS Business Rules are now active. However, Transport for NSW has not yet confirmed when all updates, particularly those under Section 4 (Device Outputs), will become mandatory.
- In the meantime, AIS station operators should contact their equipment providers to understand what updates are available and whether these can be installed now or during scheduled calibration.
- Transport for NSW has committed to providing further clarification and will update MTA NSW, Trans Lock, industry committee members, and the Committee of Review once additional guidance is available.
MTA NSW will continue to advocate for clarity and the fact that we believe there should also be a grace period, especially for older decelerometer models that require modifications. We will of course, provide members with updates as more information is received.
