NSW Fair Trading Introduces Online Tow Truck Licence Applications and New Requirements

NSW Fair Trading has introduced a new online application process for tow truck driver certificates and operator licences, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing processing delays across the sector. The new system is designed to streamline applications, speed up assessment timeframes and make it easier for new applicants to submit and manage their licensing requests.

The regulator has acknowledged that licensing delays have affected the industry and says it has prioritised new applications over renewals while working to reduce backlogs. Where a renewal application is validly submitted on time, the existing licence will generally remain in effect until a decision has been made on the renewal.

To encourage use of the new online system, NSW Fair Trading has introduced several measures:

• A 10% discount on the processing fee, or $5 (whichever is greater), for new Tow Truck Driver Certificate and Tow Truck Operator Licence applications submitted online
• A streamlined digital application process designed to make submissions quicker and easier
• Faster assessment timeframes, helping reduce processing delays across the sector

New documentation requirements have also been introduced for applicants as part of efforts to strengthen safety and professionalism within the tow truck industry.

Tow truck driver applicants must provide:

• A National Police Check (NPC) certificate issued within six weeks before submitting the application
• A driving record issued within six weeks before submitting the application

Tow truck operator applicants must provide:

• National Police Check certificates for all authorised persons associated with the business, including directors, partners and close associates

Applicants who have previously held a driver licence outside NSW, or who have lived outside NSW, will also need to provide police and driver history records from those jurisdictions.

These requirements apply to new applications only and do not apply to licence or certificate renewals. Applicants are encouraged to ensure all documents are current, complete and issued in their name before submitting an application to help avoid delays in processing.
